British Columbia Archives Releases Vital Statistics for 2006
by
EB Lapointe
As of January, 2006, birth registrations up to 1903 were added to
the website, as were marriage registration up to 1930, and death
registrations to 1985.
In addition, there are World War II Overseas Causalities, Colonial Marriages (1859-1872), and baptisms 120 years old or older.
The World War II Overseas Causalities are those which occurred overseas from 1940 to 1945.
There are over 3,423 names which appear in the updated deaths index.
The Colonial Marriages Index is taken from certified copies of
Vancouver Island and British Columbia pre-Confederation marriage
records submitted to the Colonial Secretary, Department of Vital
Statistics by the Clergy.
Only information 120 years or older can be released on baptisms
covering the years 1836 to 1885. Those who wish to view the original
document can be referred to the church in which the baptism took place.
These online registrations allow the public to view the information
such as microfilm number and registration number. One can visit the
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page to find out how to order the
microfilm.
These registrations may be viewed at <http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm>.
