The mayor of Toronto, David Miller, and the Jewish War Veterans of
Canada turned the sod for a new memorial in Toronto on Sunday, October
30th.
Known as the "Flame of Memory", the
memorial—designed by Daniel Libeskind—is expected to be dedicated in
July, 2006.
The memorial consists of an amphitheater with a
statue that is surrounded by a sweeping menorah-inspired backdrop.
Retired Major-General Lewis MacKenzie said at the
ceremony thart two-thirds of Jewish males volunteered for action during
the Second World War.
The events included a greeting, a sod-turning
ceremony, a parade, and a brief reception held at the Earl Bales
Community Centre at the Earl Bales Park, located at the corner of
Bathurst Street and Shepherd Avenue West.
